The
Role of Counselling
Workplace counselling is one of a number of human procedural interventions
which make up the human strategy of organisations to achieve a safe,
positive and productive work environment.
We know – the earlier
the detection or identification of conditional, structural or personal
people issues and appropriate preparations and interventions are activated,
the greater the likelihood of containment of risk, lower cost, low
control and high satisfaction for those involved. People work together
in mutual interest to get things resolved.
"Counselling has a role to play
as part of a bigger strategy to deal with workplace stress.
But it provides treatment not prevention. It helps people who
are stressed to cope better but doesn't prevent or identify
the structural sources of workplace stress, which can only be
dealt with by systemic audit."

Gary Cooper, BUPA Professor of Organisational Psychology and
Health and pro-Vice Chancellor at University of Manchester Institute
of Science and Technology.
